Modern SQL in PostgreSQL

SQL has gone out of fashion lately—partly due to the NoSQL movement, but mostly because SQL is often still used like 20 years ago. As a matter of fact, the SQL standard continued to evolve during the past decades resulting in the current release of 2016. In this session, we will go through the most important additions since the widely known SQL-92. We will cover common table expressions and window functions in detail and have a very short look at the temporal features of SQL:2011 and row pattern matching from SQL:2016. I have been using Doctrine2 for about 3 years now. I started with the first 2.0 stable, integrating it into my employer's in-house framework, and in the last year, I have been using it as part of Symfony2. There are quite a few things that I love about it, and a small amount that I dislike.

How We Code: ORMs and Anemic Domain Models

In this article, I'm going to cover an example of implementing some business logic in our usual Active Record patterns, and then I'll show how the same logic can be applied using the Data Mapper pattern. In both cases, we'll see how we can move our business logic into our business entities, thus avoiding anemic business domain. We'll also cover pros and cons of the two styles of ORMs and how they affect the way we write our code.

Silex: getting your project structure right

When I created my first Silex project, I almost felt encouraged to let go of my high standards in programming. So things were starting to look very much like my “legacy” PHP projects, in which everything was put in functions with lengthy parameter lists and those functions were called from within a single index.php file. I ignored many of the things about high quality software development I had learned in previous years. The result of this, was a project much less maintainable than my other recent projects.
